Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances by Adsorption on Innovative Adsorbent Materials

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute a group of organofluorine chemical synthetic compounds widely used in industries manufacturing due to their hydrophobic properties. However, PFAS have been found cause negative human health outcomes. Therefore, strong interest the possible removal these from wastewater (WW) has shown. This work aims present systematic analysis scientific literature related innovative alternative adsorbent materials that can be for treating PFAS-contaminated WW. Moreover, adsorption processes are considered, focusing attention on virgin biochar as adsorbents. Virgin comprise conventional materials, functional clays, metal–organic frameworks, functionalized organic polymers. Biochar includes obtained agricultural or food residues sewage sludge. The review shows treatment units using characterized by high capacity, but also costs. In addition, refunctionalization is difficult obtain. On contrary, biochar, which residual product other production processes, appears cost-effective solution.
